Enterprise Cloud: Don't Let the 'Sky' Swallow Your Profits

With 20 years of system expertise, I've seen CEOs mistake Cloud for a destination rather than a financial tool. Here is how to optimize.

Enterprise Cloud: Don't Let the 'Sky' Swallow Your Profits

Day 80: Sanity in the Infrastructure Game

After 20 years of wrestling with large-scale ERP and SCM systems, I see a recurring script: Enterprises enthusiastically migrate to the Cloud with promises of agility, only to find their monthly invoices becoming a financial nightmare two years later.

Cloud is not cheap. Cloud is only effective if you manage it with the mindset of an investor, not a pure technician.

“IT Infrastructure is like the skeleton of a business. If it’s too heavy, you can’t run fast. If it’s too weak, you collapse under your own weight.”

The Trap of “Infinite” Resources

In the Vietnam market, many vendors paint a picture of infinite resources. In reality, hidden costs like Egress Fees or junk data storage from legacy DMS systems can drain your contingency budget.

I once witnessed a retail giant in Ho Chi Minh City paying 30% more in Cloud costs simply due to misconfigured Auto-scaling. They bought peace of mind with cash, while the system was only utilizing 15% of its actual capacity.

Lessons from the Field: Optimization is Not Just Cutting Costs

To optimize IT Infrastructure, I always demand three decisive steps from my teams:

  1. Right-sizing: Don’t hire a container to carry a bag of rice. Measure the exact load of your ERP during peak and off-peak hours to adjust instances accordingly.
  2. Reserved Instances: For core systems like accounting (compliant with VAS) that run 24/7, commit long-term to receive discounts of up to 40-60% compared to On-demand pricing.
  3. Data Lifecycle Management: Data from five years ago doesn’t need to sit on high-speed storage. Move it to low-cost zones (Cold Storage).

Modern infrastructure management is the intersection of Technology and Finance. If you don’t master the numbers, you will never master the system.
